چکیده

Purpose of review We have summarized recently published glomerular parietal epithelial cell (PEC) research, focusing on their roles in glomerular development and physiology, and in certain glomerular diseases. The rationale is that PECs have been largely ignored until the recent availability of cell lineage tracing studies, human and murine PEC culture systems, and potential therapeutic interventions of PECs.

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy promotes renal repair by limiting glomerular podocyte and progenitor cell dysfunction in adriamycin-induced nephropathy.

We previously reported that in a model of spontaneously progressive glomerular injury with early podocyte loss, abnormal migration, and proliferation of glomerular parietal epithelial progenitor cells contributed to the formation of synechiae and crescentic lesions. Here we first investigated whether a similar sequence of events could be extended to rats with adriamycin (ADR)-induced nephropath...

De novo expression of podocyte proteins in parietal epithelial cells during experimental glomerular disease.

Studies have shown that certain cells of the glomerular tuft begin to express proteins considered unique to other cell types upon injury. Little is known about the response of parietal epithelial cells (PEC) to injury. To determine whether PECs change their phenotype upon injury to also express proteins traditionally considered podocyte specific, the following four models of glomerular disease ...

STAG ES OF DEVELOPMENT OF RENAL GLOMERULI IN THE NEWBORN RAT KIDNEY

Glomerular development of the kidney was studied in newborn rats by electron microscopy. Four different stages of glomerular development were defined: vesicle fonnation, S-shaped body stage, capillary loop fonnation, and glomerular maturation. In the fust stage, the mesenchymal cells form a spheroid mass. This is followed by the S-shaped body stage in which clefts appear in the mass. Afte...

CD74 in Kidney Disease

CD74 (invariant MHC class II) regulates protein trafficking and is a receptor for macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and d-dopachrome tautomerase (d-DT/MIF-2). CD74 expression is increased in tubular cells and/or glomerular podocytes and parietal cells in human metabolic nephropathies, polycystic kidney disease, graft rejection and kidney cancer and in experimental diabetic nephropath...

Introduction to the renal histopathology The glomerular evaluation by routine optic microscopy

Introduction The glomerular corpuscle is a spherical structure in the renal cortex. Human glomeruli are all similar in size, but the rat juxtamedullary glomeruli are larger than glomeruli of the superficial cortex. The glomerular corpuscle generates an ultrafiltrate of plasma composed by water, electrolytes and small proteins. The glomerular elements are a capillary network lined by a thin laye...
